Durant wouldn’t give up

DurantOklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant said on Friday he wasn’t capable of the same sacrifice that Garnett is prepared to make during a Twitter conversation with Nate Jones, an employee of the agency that represents him, Goodwin Sports Management.

“Would u give up 20 million for the better of the CBA?” Durant asked Jones. “I wouldn’t do it.”

Jones rightly pointed out that Garnett isn’t necessarily “giving up” the money, but simply putting the money at risk in the name of leverage in the ongoing CBA negotiations. Jones later clarified that Durant “wasn’t saying he thinks the players should just accept 50/50,” a reference to the owner’s current reported down-the-middle proposal for a revenue split. The National Basketball Players Association has been pushing for something closer to a 53 percent share for the players, which is still down from the 57 percent they were paid under the last agreement.

This is a very interesting and honest admission from Durant, but it shouldn’t be surprising, even though he is one of the league’s brightest stars. His statement isn’t evidence that he’s a “greedy millionaire” and it doesn’t represent disloyalty to his union.

NBA Commissioner David Stern has issued an ultimatum from the NBA owners in which the players have a take it or leave it offer that if rejected will force dire consequences. While NBA betting is the place to look for odds, the entire month of November has been wiped out and December is in grave danger as well with the NBA’s popular Christmas Day lineup facing the stark possibility of going dark.

Stern has upped the ante as if he were playing for a huge pot of chips in poker as he said the owners will only issue tougher demands if the players reject what is currently on the table.

The NBA Players Association has refused to blink and issued a strong statement in which they said that they will not be intimidated or forced into a bad deal. Right now the players get 57 percent of the gross revenue and the owners want a more even 50/50 split. Union President Derek Fisher and Executive Director Billy Hunter have been as stubborn as Stern and the NBA could face the same scenario that the National Hockey League faced in 2004-05 when they lost an entire season due to the owners having to get “cost certainty” in a league that was gushing red ink and suffering from competitive imbalance.

Stern has threatened to go all the way down to a 47 percent split for the players if they refuse to take the current offer that is on the table. Some owners in small market cities would love for the union to continue its stance and give Stern the opportunity to drop the hammer on the players.

It is interesting to note that the greatest player to ever take the court in the NBA, Michael Jordan, who is now the owner of the Charlotte Bobcats, is one of the toughest hard line owners.

In the last meeting between the two sides a federal mediator went back and forth between two rooms as each side was isolated from the other. Some current NBA players such as Paul Pierce of the Boston Celtics and Deron Williams of the New Jersey Nets have brought up the possibility of union decertification if talks break down further. The problem with decertification is that it could cause potential antitrust snags with the government. In the meantime the owners are also pushing a more aggressive revenue sharing plan.

What it all means is that this next week may decide whether or not there is a 2011-2012 NBA season.
